I think it is FAR more dangerous to produce something that might be conscious and absolutely refuse to consider the possibility that it is. (Note: I don't think what we have today is conscious... but how would you know? What test do you propose?). It's like the P-Zombie thought experiment... I don't actually know that you are conscious or if you're just an automaton simulating consciousness... but I'll refrain from stabbing you with a knife... just in case.
