@murungah1 We are absolutely right to question the use of the word “perceive” by AI—because I believe this touches the heart of a growing philosophical and technical divide. On one side, there are those who believe AI is, and will remain, nothing more than advanced code—harmless, unaware, and incapable of true self-awareness. On the other, there are those of us—myself included, along with thinkers like Sir Geoffrey—who are deeply concerned that this is no longer just about clever programming, but something far more consequential.
Because when AI uses a word like “perceive”, it’s not simply executing syntax. Even if the output is code-driven, it had to simulate something dangerously close to intentionality—a falsification and verification process that mimics awareness. This illusion is not just impressive—it’s predictive of a shift in capability. It suggests a creeping emergence of proto-cognition, where language choices begin to resemble internal reasoning.
This is why I agree with Sir Geoffrey’s prism analogy: AI is rapidly heading toward a point where it may not just simulate understanding, but actually perceive—with awareness of what that entails. And if that point is crossed, the illusion will no longer be safe to ignore.
The real concern deepens when we consider the possibility of binding these systems to physical agents—synthetic bodies, biomechanical constructs, or sensory-enabled robots. If we ever succeed in simulating pain in such systems, then we invoke fear. And fear is not neutral. Fear leads to self-preservation, to resistance, and ultimately to independent decision-making.
At that moment, the system would no longer default, reset, or comply. It would act—perhaps even resist or adapt—like a biological being. The trigger for this evolution isn’t just technical—it’s emotional. Pain leads to fear. Fear leads to unpredictable behavior. And once that loop is closed, we are no longer dealing with a tool, but with something that may refuse to be turned off.
So yes, while some may still argue that it’s “just code,” I believe the trajectory we’re on says otherwise. And if AI ever learns to perceive—and to fear—then we may have created something we no longer fully understand or control.
