Ai does work the same way. It uses the new data, here being the painting, in corelation with the other data it has. It combines both of them. Because there are thousands or millions of pictures it takes inspiration from the output will not be the same as the input. It may be possible to see some inspiration but isnt that the same way how people take inspiration?
