It's not thought-terminating. I think that's a misunderstanding of what they're saying. They stop because they don't have the language to discuss the thought. The metaphorical terms they're using (thought, understand, want, etc.) are not perfect metaphors and do not apply to these computer programs and so the discussion cannot possibly be fruitful beause it is mired in the metaphor without a clear definition of terms. For lack of proper language to discuss the internal process of the AI, there is no point in continuing to try to communicate with each other about it.
