@roseaphile It's not actually theft, by definition. In all forms of law and ethics "theft" requires the thief depriving a property owner of access to their own property. The angle most people are thinking of when they say "art theft" is closer to "infringement", but the case here is that the outputs (the only thing art ethics and law care about) are in most cases different enough from the inputs to be non-infringing. I haven't seen evidence that people are willing to use AI instead of artists. In fact there was recently a screenshot of an AI dude trying to get a job with his skills and the recruiter saying "please don't do this." And on the commissioner side, the people who were commissioning art before, and use AI, still are commissioning art. The people who never would pay for art in the first place still aren't. So there's no evidence of job loss. The only AI usage I've seen that "replaces" artists is at the level where the artist isn't really doing a job they want to be anyway - meaningless corporate art (often done by graphic designers outside their job description right now), bottom-barrel book covers where artists never even have time to read the book, just "dump out something that looks vaguely ok," and similar mentally-draining stuff.
