Regardless of what anyone says about it, you nailed it right here. He’s not simply being “a tough host,” who is trying to make the guest simplify the topic for the sake of the audience. He’s being dense. He doesn’t get it. He falls to grok the whole thing, even though he’s clearly unconsciously fearful of the same thing. Klein has the same problem that so many people have—optimism.
It’s not that optimism is bad, because it’s clearly a powerful tool for helping us overcome so many things. But optimism alone doesn’t solve anything, and currently, where AI is concerned, we have only two things going on, 1) our ability to make it bigger and more powerful, and 2) our naive optimism.
The guest is being incredibly patient and polite in the face of what essentially amounts to Klein being obtuse. On some level, he knows what is being said is true, but he doesn’t want to believe it. He wants to believe that good prevails.
