Thing is, you cannot provide any proof that these programs do not learn like humans do. HUMANS scan patterns with their eyes. Pattern recognition in the brain interprets those scans and makes sense of them. Does it break down the image with noise? Maybe not that part, but honestly we don’t know. The image doesn’t remain in any perfect state in our brains, we understand most of its form though, we try to remember that childhood porch, and details are missing. As far as I’m concerned, that AI is learning, maybe not by the EXACT mechanic that we learn, but it’s close enough. Where it falls short is in taking seemingly unrelated things and making connections to derive inspiration that way, but we are getting there. As for you’re number one, maybe not based on your very narrow and subjective description of the word “create”. I’ve been creating original art with the AI fairly consistently. If you think creating things based on things you’ve already seen isn’t really creating, well then nobody has every created anything. Every piece of art is derivative from prior exposure. You think someone who draws a dragon does so based on seeing an actual dragon? No, it’s based on other peoples art. Feel free to try and gatekeep art and creation if you wish, it’s not going to stop this from happening. I am aware there are paralyzed artists who draw from their mouth, and I know they’ll never be capable of a Da Vinci or a Van Gough. I also know it takes a tremendous amount of dedication that not everyone has the mental capacity for. And that’s what it comes down to. Not everyone has what it takes to become a good painter or drawer. Sometimes the effort required to teach the arm to be your minds translator is too much. Lucky for me, I found a tool that translates better than my hand. I come up with a concept, put in a long description, generate an image, reiterate, be more specific with angles and composition, describe backgrounds, and I generate more art, sometimes I even make changes by hand. A lot of the AI artists I’ve engaged with put in more work than your standard photographer. Whom, might I add, also walk into cities full of other people’s work, take photos of that work, and then sell it. And yeah, I’m aware of the lawsuits. What was it they called the AI? “Collage Art”? They better get a better understanding of how these things work and be prepared to argue against the hundreds of other uses for this technology. A few thousand artists ain’t much of a dent. You think your government wants to hinder the technology other countries are racing to get to first? You think they’ll respect your copyright laws? You think a couple thousand thumbnails mean anything to anyone? You don’t even have a building to protest in front of, do you? Unions have fought harder against automation and lost. But please, go on some more about how different AI is from people, so I can tell you that you are a meat computer with intelligence software running every time you look at art. Your brain does everything you complain that the AI is doing.
