The scary part is how humanity will not stop the competition and keep progressing at ever increasing speeds. Governments and private companies aren't going to stop advancing thanks to capitalism and nationalism, money and power. Safety committees and laws are useless because governments will continue doing what they do behind closed doors for the sake of their nations 'safety'. It's not a matter of "if", not instead "what can AI do" and "how long until it's done".
