The difference is that the printing press only displaced a small number of workers relative to the population in a single field, did so gradually as the technology was a serious investment for businesses, and it was only disrupting one kind of job (so there were plenty of others to switch to to make a living).
Compare that to AI which disrupts numerous white collar professions in a multitude of industries, and because it costs so little to implement it’s reshaping that sector basically overnight. The result is a massive number of white collar workers with nowhere to go. (Besides the minority of them that can switch to being an AI wrangler)
