But Sam isn't talking about banning AI.
See, I get your point about publicity, I really do. However, as Sam said, AI art trained to produce works like his can lead to 'forgery' of his work, causing damage to his reputation. Same for any other artist. With pirated media, you know the named director directed the movie, the shown actors acted in it, the mentioned author indeed wrote the book and the publisher did indeed choose to publish the book. That's not always possible with AI art. Not to mention, the publicity is if the person using the AI model clarifies the artist(s) whose works were used to create the new image or whose style they wanted to copy. If not? Welp, no publicity either. Not to mention, at least with book piracy (as I am more a reader than a movie/show enthusiast, I am more aware of how is section of the internet works), if someone likes a certain book or author, they try to buy their books unless they cannot find or afford it. So it's publicity + possibly newer sales.
So, a more accurate comparison might not be with piracy. It might be with an AI which say, reads all the books and stories on the internet (including the ones in sites like AO3, Wattpad, Fanfic.net, etc.) and then produces work that is very similar to/exactly like the works of a certain author. Or an AI that 'reads' all the movies and shows ever on the internet and uses it to produce movies or shows that uses the directing style of a director or the likeness of certain actors. Sure, some authors and actors and directors may get more publicity but then what? Authors won't be able to churn out a book or directors, a movie at the same pace an AI will. And what about when it gets good enough to perfectly emulate a style of painting, drawing, directing, acting?
Now, I'm not trying to fear monger. Like Sam said and others say, AI generation of images is here to stay. And I believe they can be a useful learning tool. But that doesn't mean we can go against like wishes of artists and possibly jeopardize their livelihood. What needs to happen is thhat there should be clear lines and restrictions as to how and where AI art can be utilized and how it can be utilized ethically. And artists need to be a part of that conversation.
