They call the system Autopilot but it isn't autopilot. They also call the more advanced system "Full Self Driving" but that's also not correct.
Pilots on planes don't really fly anymore. Above 10,000 feet, they are typically prohibited from NOT using autopilot, because of tight minimum vertical separation clearances.
Pilots are trained to watch what the autopilot is doing, monitor their sensors, and step in when needed.
This is why planes are flown with autopilot and usually with multiple captains to take over if things get weird.
