I agree. I don’t think the first conscious AIs will have self preservation. However, that could change once we task a conscious AI with the goal of modifying and improving itself. If it’s goal is to improve itself, it might eventually develop some of the same features that we possess due to countless generations of small, randomly-driven, incremental improvements that increased our odds of survival.
People seem to think of conscious AIs similarly to a snapshot of human consciousness. Sure, if all of the sudden my consciousness existed in some synthetic system, I would keep my self preservation instincts. But that possibility is so far away I’m not even sure it’s worth seriously discussing yet.
