@MarkWernsdorfer Well, as you said, you're now _ascribing_ intent. I believe this says more about how we communicate than some intrinsic property of language.
I still think that one of the main reasons many see hints of consciousness in chatbots is because we subconsciously anthropomorphize talking subjects. If they weren't trained to answer this way, I believe it would be significantly harder for them to persuade people that they are self-aware like we saw in the early days of chatgpt.
Finally, concerning intent, context matters a lot here. If you're interacting with a system that simply answers your queries, even if with profound insight, is there really a point questioning the motives behind its communication with you?
