„This is why people clapped back on you”
Did they? People seem pretty supportive of Sam, With the exception of those who defend AI art.
„If we removed all copyright data from the work and people had to opt in, the HOPE is that it would produce significantly worse art and allow artists to be well above it. ”
Please, that is not the entire story. People hate having their work used for the purpose of replacing themselves.
„Realistically though, even if they removed all the copyright work and allowed people to opt in, it could still produce extremely good art”
If that was the case, they would have never tried to put copyrighted works into their training datasets.
„and there are plenty of artists who are already using AI in their workflow to produce work at a faster rate”
Art is not about producing things faster. Stop thinking like a content creators, and start thinking like an actual creative person.
„ So to make a comparison, in order to compress 953k GB down to 4 GB.. we're talking about the ability to compress a file by 0.0000041943% of it's original size. ”
You falsely believe this must be lossless compression. It is not. These programs use lossy compression(aka, compression with loss of data) to get their results. And stable diffusion can actually be use as a superior image compression method to actual other existing ones, even if not at the level you claim it is.
„It doesn't copy any images (there are overtraining/overfit issues as you mentioned - but those aren't really a huge issue in the original training data.)”
It has been proven that 1.8% of the images stable diffusion produces are copies of things existing in the training data set.
That is a fact.
„Unfortunately, pandora's box HAS been opened already.”
Stop being a defeatist.
„However, companies like Disney will be the ones to be able to train models off of BILLIONS of copyright works that they personally own. So what happens if Disney does that?”
Keep the laws that say that AI generated stuff cannot be copyrighted.
Both the EU and the USA copyright systems agree on this. AI generated stuff cannot be copyrighted.
„How do you compete with Disney if they train their model? ”
I ask the same of you. How are you going to fight economy of scale? Disney is so big, that they can afford themselves to run programs thousands of times bigger then yours and hundreds of times better.
„So in the end, your hope is to cripple the publics access to a "good" model. But this is something that will absolutely backfire, when rich companies like Disney who own massive amounts of copyrighted content train their own models”
AI generated things cannot be copyrighted. We should keep it like that.
„ You're then left in a place where you can't compete with Disney's work”
And you cannot compete with anything bigger that uses these programs to produce copyrighted things.
They will use they money to train bigger, better models then can fit on any personal computer, and run them on hundreds of such computers.
Trying to use them to compete with corporations is a loosing battle, thanks to economy of scale.
