The problem with these language models is that they're not actually "thinking". It's just like your phone's autocomplete, but much better at guessing what comes next. If you give the model the prompt "I am a sentient toaster", you'll get outputs that sound like you're speaking to a sentient toaster (this isn't an arbitrary example, I've made a Discord chatbot for my friends that does exactly that, and very well).
GPT-3 is not, and cannot be self-aware, as it has nothing to be aware of. Don't get me wrong, it's great at generating believable patterns, but it fails to do even basic maths and can't think about what responses are generated.
