I’m a computer engineer, using lidar also introduces additional dangers, I need to read up more on Waymo, I do think a fusion of lidar,radar,ultrasonic with camera trained neural nets seems intuitively like the best solution, however you could imagine stray debris or unusual objects triggering a lidar to signal to the car to take serious evasive control which might be even more dangerous. I don’t like approach of article, but it’s fair enough, but not very thoughtful on the tech side, bring in third party engineers who can commment
All that said, software controlling cars scares me.
