@crazando Firstly, I’m happy to inform you that intellectual property rights exist! Artists own the rights to their artwork. They made it, it’s theirs. Seriously, just Google it if you for whatever reason doubt this basic fact. Secondly, it existing physically has nothing to do with it. Art made on a computer is no different from art made on a sheet of paper, just as a story typed on a computer is no different from a story written in a notebook. Just because it’s not physical doesn’t mean it’s not intellectual property. Thirdly, as far as artists “copying” each others’ work goes, when artists reference from something else, they’re not stealing it, they’re observing it and recreating it based on their perception of what they’re trying to depict. Art imitates life, so of course artists are going to have to look at what they’re trying to depict in order to create a proper representation of it. Referencing is when you view an image, place, or thing with the intent of recreating it by your own hand. The only thing you’re doing with it is observing it so you know what it looks like. If an artist is doing something like tracing it, inserting it into their work, or splitting it into small pieces and rearranging them, that’s just as much theft as what AI does. That’s not their intellectual property to use. Taking inspiration, doing an art study, or using what someone drew as a loose reference for your own work is fine, but that’s not what the computer does. It doesn’t observe an image and then individually recreate it in its own way, it pulls a bunch of examples from all over and Frankensteins them together into what it was prompted to create. The fact people have prompted it to make drawings only to see a jumble of mashed-up signatures in the corner proves as much.
