Which does not mean that all are bad. some are pretty good, or some are pretty good part of the time and completely stupid at other times. Even if you are a great driver today, how great of a driver will you be in 15 years time? Or after that glass of wine with dinner and while talking animatedly with the other occupants of the car? Which doesn't distract autonomous driving systems. That said, of course there are other ways to reduce traffic accident fatalities. For example, the US had 37,461 of those in 2016, with around 323 million people living there. The EU had 26.109 in 2015 with around 510 million people living there. Which is quite a difference. Considering that regular very thorough technical car inspections are normal in the EU, as well as mandatory one on one training with a professional driving instructor to get a license in most EU countries, it seems simple things like vehicle safety and driver training could already have a meaningful impact. However, it could be much cheaper for the individual and improve safety for those not able to afford new cars as well if new cars come with autonomous driving or safety features. Not to mention, changing a very old system of how to get your driving license is not that easy.
