one more thought, sorry. this conversation seemed to largely be focused on the potential for AI to be an existential threat the way that... mutants in the first live-action X-Men movie were seen as an existential threat. the way that HAL-9000 or GLaDOS could be existential threats, or Skynet or AM from I Have No Mouth. nuclear weapons show that we don't need superintelligences to create an existential threat, though, and i think that kind of outcome is immensely more likely, in part because it doesn't even require an answer to the question of "is a superintelligence even possible?"
