@EchoBat No, artists actually do not reference other/artists all the time. I know this because I have been sharing my whole life with artists, and they reference 1% of the material they use from others; it would be impossible for them to even remember all the artists they take references from. And this goes for every single kind of artist, from the ones that teach themselves to the ones that went to university and have done 4 other courses in different techniques and now work as reputable freelancers. Imitation is so integrated in the human mind that most of us don't distinguish it from how naturally we work. AI do this so much as humans do that you can see that there are different styles depending wich tool you use, the confusion a lot of people have is that a lot of "products" use the same AI and thus having a similar result, but depending of what styles have learnt first and what they are asked more there are noticible diferences in the result; same as humans. You are the one who is being completely dishonest. I never said that learning through imitation was theft in the art community, I am just saying that doing that is not stealing. The art community, as you have just pointed out, have considering imitation as theft when the piece is sold as an "original", and AI literally does the oposite (if you don't know, AI productions can't have copyright or any right at all, so it is imposible to claim it as own"), humans do that. The problem here is not with the tool but the people who have stolen others' properties, and this isn't something new; it existed before you were a thought in the universe. So, yes, I am right, you are right, that is not theft fact. AI art uses references to recreate something new. And no, it is not considered theft by almost no one, not referencing an artist that "inspired you" to have your style after years of imitation. Right now I am not in touch with the artist community due to personal problems, but in the past I could mention some artist from the old instagram, tumblr and pinterest that surely people used as reference when doing they draws, not because I was a fan but because (for some reason that I cannot explain) all my artists friends, and their artist friends, have asked my opinion on their drawings and asked me for help with something they were strugling with. Watching how they were doing their work is how I learn of this other artist that people used as references. Third point. When I mentioned fanart, and this is mostly my fault because it was more of an inside term that I used with my collegues and friends than what the actual word means, I am not refering to what people do when they imitate others artist IPs, I mean the giants warehouse of little stores of independent artist that sold drawings of their favorites (but most of the time popular) characters. Even if the work is theirs, most of the time, the IP is 100% stolen, as they don't have any type of copyright or right at all to sell it. Don't get me wrong, I am not in favor of companies being jealous of their copyright, but I know that a great portion of the artist community does this for money. I like being able to buy others' perspectives on the characters I like, but that doesn't make it more legal; it is literally a copyright and authors' rights infringement. I thought this point was obvious to an artist because this debate we did weekly within my friends, "to steal or not to steal," we called it, because it gave a 60% rise in your on sellings and busted their OC's recognition. I am sorry, but I think you are being dishonest here, art, like all things, is learnt through imitation, and AI literally does that, learn through imitation. Right now, it is going into that phase where it seems to be copying everything it sees, which is a phase in art learning. Deep learning is about that, learning from patterns through repetition, it is always incomplete as humans are, but AIs are not humans, they are machines, Virtually Intelligent (I am inclined to use that term, VI instead of AI, but no one would understand me xD). AI art does not steal, as you don't blame the brush of the artist that sells fraudulent imitations as thef, you blame the human. AI is a tool, not a conscious being. And no, I don't consider myself an Artist, I do not practice art anymore because I have a trauma response. If I were like you and judge everyone for what my limited senses and knowledge can perceive based on my personal bias, I would say something like "I am more conected to art than you, because trying to do it literally hurts me", but that is silly, I don't know you and the world wouldn't change if I said anything like that. The reason why I wrote this is not for artists to feel bad, but to be more aware of what they are and what the new tools are. It is to promote thought and conversation. I don't need to be better than you to teach you something, and you don't need to protect your ego to teach me something. I know... art is something personal and intimate, and it's scary and frustrating when someone misunderstands it... But you do the same to others constantly (I don't mean you personally, but as a "you human"). You did it with me, and you will continue to do it to others, as we all do. And if I was condescendent in this response, I did because you were defensive and not honest, I can respect you being defensive, but dishonesty is something I loath. If it was a miscommunication, well... sorry. Just keep drawing, not for others but for you. Art might be something that creates a reaction in others, but being an artist is being able to express yourself. You don't know how terrible it feels not being able to do so. It doesn't need to be you work, just don't stop.
