@peterford5408 technically speaking, they shouldn't be, but the name stuck. Under the hood, it's still a language model style transformer trained on token sequences. It's just that these sequences aren't purely text anymore. They're also encoded visual and audio data. In papers you'll see more precise terms like "multimodal LLM" or "VLM", but in practice people still say "LLM" even when the model handles text + audio and video in a unified way. So the "language" part of the name is indeed misleading nowadays.
