i don't think LLMs are totally unable to tell whether something is accurate or a confabulation, they probably can tell sometimes, just not always.
it might not be entirely dissimilar to when a human misremembers something. like, you don't always notice when your memory is off, but you probably probably have some idea of how sure you are of any given thing.
