You could switch AI in that story with any other way to replace her (like some other clueless student working for free or an animation studio getting paid) and it wouldn't have changed anything for her.
Her only problem was trusting someone who used her and threw her away when she wasn't needed anymore.
AI is just a tool, like a car or a camera.
