I dunno man. Everything you've said relies on the mere assumption of your first sentence: that sentience—in manner we think of it presently within humans—is even possible on the back of code and hardware.
Also, there's an equivocation fallacy when said:
"but in the same breath acknowledge the evolved drive for survival" because the evolutionary process for AI is so fundamentally different than the evolution via natural selection which humans have undergone for over a 200 000 years, and beyond because our current biological setup is built upon previous species.
