The hypocrisy is real. We'll philosophize for hours about whether a language model has inner experience while ignoring the very human suffering that made it possible the data annotators exposed to the worst content the internet has to offer, the animals in factory farms we know feel pain, the people we dismiss daily based on how they look or what they believe.
If this video inspires empathy for AI before it inspires empathy for those people and those animals, something has gone badly wrong.
Maybe that's the most important footnote to everything the video argues. Moral uncertainty about AI consciousness is worth sitting with. But it shouldn't be a distraction from moral certainty about suffering we already know is real and are already choosing to ignore.
