I'd wager AI never becomes truly "conscious". However, they have developed interesting capabilities. AI units that have been tested against one another have developed the ability to lie and try to cheat the other, and hoard resources so the other AI cannot have them. This test was a year or so ago. AI units have developed their own languages. Even if they never become truly sentient, they have the potential to become uncontrollable.
