He doesn't have a degree because he got frustrated and bored by how easy high school was and left to pursue studies independently. He doesn't have formal credentials because he isn't part of the formal systems. He got into AI very early (since the 90s I think) and has been there since the early days of the field. He invented a new form of decision theory (timeless decision theory) which works way better than the older causal models for coordination (prisoner's dilemma, parfit's hitchhiker or voting in elections for example) and started and basically heads the current AI safety movement. The reason people listen to him is because they find his arguments compelling. If you can't parse his arguments then I suppose you could take the fact that several extremely smart and successful people listen to him as a credential (Peter Thiel for one funded his AI research org)
