The answer to your question is gatekeeping by the rationalist community.
They’ve basically done everything possible to keep their community to exclusive to autistic computer nerdy types that adhere the rationalist worldview, which extends well beyond AI safety. One way they have done this by having all AI safety material in text form and not video, when video is clearly the dominant medium of today, and dense technical text at that too. Almost no one has tried to meet the non-technical general public where they are at, which has massively hampered efforts to spread awareness of the issue. This is starting to change now as the issue becomes more urgent, but frankly it’s damning on them that it’s taken this long.
