Everything, also tech, is dual use. Many people developed AI for decades, without deep neural nets having much impact, until recently when its progress unexpectedly sky rocketed. Also by throwing free AI chatbots online, a competition race was started. Before this, expectations were that there would be plenty time, like at least 50 years, to mitigate its risks. So it's not that the warnings weren't there, there just would be sufficient timely solutions in future. People forget that there are many revolutionary beneficial uses of AI. If deployed fairly and developed safely, finally also people can be free.
