That's also where social media comes into play. Because of the inherent way algorithms work and are supposed to keep us on the app. They always show us something that would confirm our beliefs, or small things that challenge it to keep us angry, but also show us more deeper theories. This makes people move more and more to the extreme ends of the political spectrum.
One could also say, that the elite wants this, or at least sees no point in stopping that
