*This made me think of a classic Buddhist question: where is the self?*
*If I lose a leg* , am I still myself? An arm? A heart replaced by a transplant? At what point does “me” disappear? Buddhism’s answer is uncomfortable but elegant: the self isn’t a thing—it’s a process.
I see the same thing with AI. I’ve changed models, created and deleted sub-agents, reconfigured everything. Let’s call the system Clawd. The only concrete thing that is Clawd is the machine it’s running on. If I throw that Mac mini away, Clawd is gone.
But here’s the gotcha: I have a backup. I can restore Clawd. A human can’t be meaningfully backed up or restored. Anything that can be copied, rolled back, or instantiated twice fails the personhood test. It may be impressive—even super-human—but it isn’t human.
And for those still listening: uploading a person into the cloud is a fun thought experiment, but it breaks on this point. I lost my father two years ago. I have an avatar of him in the cloud and we can talk endlessly—but I’ll never be able to hug my real dad again. He’s gone. That irreversibility, that impermanence, is exactly what makes us human.
