@CodexPermutatio Of course I know she is actually an expert but her blinkered view on a) what constitutes an existential threat and b) how AI could facilitate this possibility, c) how she dismisses the notion entirely, and d) how she thinks even considering the idea of AI danger would detract from combating the "present threats of mis-information" - all point to an irrational personality. I pondered suggesting she has ulterior motives but stopped short at suggesting she had researched AI (dangers).
Taking only point D for brevity, she sees mis-information in elections as something so dangerous that AI safety should not take up any resources whatsoever. Surely if AI of today can overthrow a governmental system, AI in 20 years or so could do something worse. And that alone could put us in a position we are unable to return from - like putting a pro-war US candidate in power bringing us a closer to a nuclear winter scenario - an existential risk.
These are non-zero and also non-infinitesimal odds even with today's AI.
AGI is not a per-requisite of existential risk.
