@nathanuncentered6172 I work in the field and have a CS degree. I'm not claiming to be some genius, but I feel like I'm more than qualified to speak on this. Some things I want to point out: Elon Musk is a business man, not a computer programmer. This is a claim that SpaceX and Tesla employees themselves have called him out on. I know he worked in Silicon Valley early in his career, but based on his education I would guess he worked mainly on the business side. He does have some engineering and physics related education but that doesn't qualify him to speak on the topic of computers. That being said though, I'm sure Elon is well aware of how a chat bot works, and I highly doubt he would agree with this Google engineer, regardless of what predictions he's made in the past. Ray is more credible, but I also think his thoughts on the singularity and AI are often taken out of context and sensationalized quite a bit. The way he talks about AI is very different than how news media typically conveys his thoughts, with the latter usually presenting a much more sci-fi inspired slant. This is just conjecture here, but I feel like a real one on one conversation with him on his thoughts about AI would go very different than what the quotes attributed to him would have you believe. At least, thats what I gathered on his view points when comparing his own books and writings compared to articles about him. As far as quantum computing goes, I did say "figure out quantum computing", not invent it. I'm well aware there are some rudimentary proof of concept quantum computers that exist. But there is no practical use for them yet as we still don't fully understand how to best utilize them. That will take a long time, especially since the basis of all our computing for almost the past century has been based in binary. The switch to practical applications of quantum computing won't happen overnight, and would first require us to much better understand quantum physics, and only then can we start implementing practical uses for quantum computers. Either way, you're right to not just trust what a random stranger on the internet says. I implore you to research these topics yourself. And I don't mean just quotes from "experts" (which 99% of the time, unless you are personally speaking to them, news media love to take their words out of context and give a sensationalized version of what they meant). Best way to understand these topics is to have at least a baseline understanding of how these things work. Point of the matter is, LaMDA is just a complex chat bot. If you have an understanding of how chat bots work, it's very clear LaMDA has not reached anywhere near true sentience, and this so called engineer is just speaking out his ass. I'm sure if you asked Elon or Ray about his claims, they'd probably similarly call him out.
