@Pyrrho_Because they didn't really do anything, frankly. A programmer made an algorithm that copied the efforts of countless human beings so that their machine can replicate the averages of those individuals efforts, sometimes as an near exact copy. The people who were copied created art. The programmers who cultivated their talents and created the machine might be called artists as well. But some guy punching keys into a search engine and then claiming the results - even profiting off of them? That guy's just a thief. Which is what the issue at hand is. Theft. Which is a crime pretty much everywhere.
