I am not convinced by his argument, I still don’t see much of a difference between a human taking inspiration from an image and an AI training on the same image. It might be a different process, but at the end of the day both an artist’s brain and an AI are taking in data and generalizing from it in some way. I’m also not convinced by his argument that an AI can perfectly copy an image while a human can’t. A human definitely can, just copy paste the original image. This might seem dumb, but my point is that you need a lot of information (maybe the entire image) to perfectly copy it, but obviously that’s useless. An AI isn’t a glorified copy paste tool, it’s inherently generalizing from its training data, same as a human. We value it because it can put this data together in new ways. The process by which it does this is undeniably different to the way a human does, and some may argue that its process has less artistic merit, but I think that’s a separate discussion. If you still disagree though, consider a hypothetical AI that we knew did work the same way as a human (maybe by directly emulating a human brain), and you could check it’s work and see it using the same process as a human artist. Would you still have the same objections? Don’t get me wrong, I am sympathetic to the concerns of artists and I don’t doubt they are suffering from this influx of AI art, but once again I think this is a separate discussion from the ethics of AI art.
