Alex Moldovan- Heres a scenario. You are following a truck with loose pipes and it looks like one is about to fall down. Now you are aproaching a merge and traffic is heavy behind. There is traffic on both sides. Your experience has taught you to be cautious, so you decelerate, and pump your brake lights a couple of times to warn those behind you of a possible problem ahead. They begin to slow. You watch as one of the pipes rattles more than it should and the driver is unaware. You establish a 50/50 chance that it will come rolling off the bed of the truck. You maintain your distance and you've warned those behind you and you predicted a possible outcome scenario if it does roll off. Once you've established the procedure of avoidance those around you are now aware at what you are cautioning. They all conform and slow down. Everyone watches the truck with the loose pipe continue. You blink your head lights to warn the driver of the truck. You try to warn him but he continues, unaware that a pipe is loose and could roll off into traffic. Your exit is coming up, so its up to the other drivers to maintain vigilance, and hopefully your anticipation prevents an accident. Now the pipe at this point hasn't rolled off. There is nothing to avoid. A self driving car is not able to use experience and insight to establish a possible outcome. It has no way to determine that a loose pipe could come flying off at any moment. Nor does it know that it is metal, nor wood or plastic. Nor that its cylindrical, nor how it will respond when it hits the ground at 70 mph when it bounces left, nor that the 18 wheeler that is approaching to the left of the pipe, how the pipe will react when it is run over by the rear wheels of the trailer. Nor how those around will respond, nor give warning to those around. I mentioned the train because the only scenario in which probability is removed is on a train track. Driving requires millions of calculations not only based on physics, but experience and insight. And even then humans are prone to accidents. But a human is able to detect and calculate many scenarios and use intuition to determine the best outcome. There is no way a microchip can perform the task of driving in a world of uncertainty!
