@VolodymyrPankov defining terms is really important and I'm constantly doing it myself but he's not actually really trying to define terms. He's trying to Muse on what the ultimate meaning of things are in some pseudoscientific platonic sense which is not something that scientists do, it's something that amateur philosophers do. I know, I've been in many of these conversations.
You have to as a scientist, and yes I've been in actual real world scientific research in both molecular biology and psychometrics, to converge on working definitions based on practical real world stuff.
Someone who is actually acting like a scientist, rather than an amateur philosopher, would be converging on, what phenomena are we trying to examine here, what do we care about. His conduct here was nothing like a scientist.
I've also read the significant portions of a new kind of science and just abandoned it because there was no science in there. Yes he's worked as a theoretical physicist but a lot of theoretical physicists don't actually do physics, see string theory for an example.
I do not comprehensively know his work, but I suspect he is good at mathematics and computer science, but not actually good at reality or science. He thinks in rarefied abstract counterfactuals which is fun, something that I do myself, and can lead to interesting ideas, but not someone you would want fixing your car if you have to be on the road in 2 days, someone who would want to save you if you had a heart attack and he was your doctor, or someone you would want working as an engineer on the bridge that you were going to drive over.
Eliezers big failure was not nailing him down from him floating off into the clouds. Honestly what I saw today from him was the exact opposite of what a good scientist is and what a good scientist does. Yes, I watched the interview all the way through and was even more disappointed by the end in him. I don't think I'll be wasting any time on his new theory of everything. There's a lot of fantasy that masquerades as science.
I'm glad he found his niche doing some research in mathematics and a lot of research in computer algorithms and cellular automata, but all of this is not science, it's about imagining worlds beyond the one we live in that are much simpler and more rarefied and perhaps more beautiful.
