To be clear, one benefit of LLM is that you can literally instruct them to seek from and incorporate more varied sources (assuming the code isn't too tampered with), and to teach in as many alternate ways as you can imagine. There is a default state for new users or chats/projects, but you can orient it in many different directions, refining further as you go on, and even getting the LLM to output its developed method of 'teaching' to a file that you can immediately use on another LLM/chat and get mostly the same 'flavor'. Conversation memory suffers as a chat goes on, but it can still interpret the entire conversation and output its summary for you to use later. This summary can totally include any refinements you requested.
'Prompting' LLMs isn't the miracle to overcome all of this tech's limitations, but the experiencing of using 'AI' also isn't exactly as bad as you just put it. It won't be long until you can directly influence a LLM (hosted externally or even locally) to express itself almost exactly as you would, add a little chaos to 'humanize' it, and it'll convince 99% of people that its really you, whether in an instructor mode or in a messenger window with a friend. The conformity is *largely* what you make of it.
If I was a teacher today (I'm not and never have been), I'd learn 'AI' ASAP, actually. But not to welcome it with open arms, but to understand that higher ups absolutely WILL force it on my job, so I better become as adept as possible, as soon as possible, at using it to enhance my teaching instead of allowing the lazier inclinations of students to take over. I'm not sure if its the case now, but over time there will be the capacity to 'emulate' myself to a high accuracy (at least in text) and have my students learn in a closed system that refers only to 'me' in the classroom and school study time. I can then even take feedback and concerns from students and parents and incorporate it into my 'model', as well as engage with students as a mixture student-peer, using any glimpse of their curiosity to trigger engagement with material generated from the LLM, and putting my effort towards matching that with anything I can include that'll be in standardized testing. I'd socially engineer...ahem... I'd endeavour to be the teacher that any student would feel bad about cheating for, and the one that always encourages further complex 'prompting', exploring sources, and frequently testing critical thinking. Homework would be minimal, and what would exist, would be things that need more hands-on constructing, or assignments where I simply assume LLMs are being used and that its the very point. In-class would more heavily weigh on discussions, presentations, and small groups that figure out how to parse and develop ideas, not just regurgitate material. That is, if admin let me be this kind of teacher, HA!
I agree with your positive points. What happened to the library? Well, sometimes its still used for books, but its increasingly a repository for them, rather than active resource. Instead, libraries that are more forward-acting are making their services into a media-lending centre, a community gathering place for events and lessons, a calmer environment to take your younger child to learn something, and a place to house certain more clunky tools that won't typically be in a home or necessarily in a school. Libraries are still being used, but not in the same way, and its been increasingly uphill, trying to keep the public's attention.
