@avgjoe5969 Tesla’s collision‑avoidance system by itself does not steer the car. The features listed under Collision Avoidance Assist are:
Forward Collision Warning (alerts you)
Automatic Emergency Braking (applies brakes)
Obstacle‑Aware Acceleration (reduces throttle)
None of these perform steering.
🚗 So when does a Tesla steer to avoid a crash?
Steering‑based avoidance only happens under Autopilot or Full Self‑Driving (FSD), not under basic collision‑avoidance.
Tesla calls this:
“Automatic Emergency Steering”
…but it is part of the Autopilot/FSD stack, not the basic safety suite.
It can:
swerve within the lane
nudge away from obstacles
avoid side‑collisions
move away from vehicles drifting into your lane
But again — this requires Autopilot/FSD to be active.
