The U.S is a democracy. It's a constitutional democratic republic. It has problems getting there, but that's what the civil rights movement was about. The constitution is what makes the country a democracy and demands our representatives are held accountable. The civil rights movement used the constitution to ensure democracy for all. Part of that includes understanding civics and civic engagement. The biggest problem with the U.S is the governments preference for the wealthy over the poor, so most laws are made to protect the wealthiest and their assets/estates rather than support the poor. This is against the liberty and equality that is promised in the constitution. Equality and liberty is for all, not just the wealthy.
Karen Hao explains in the interview how current companies producing A.G.I are using the neoliberal economic system to underpay foreign workers and expose them to harmful material, disregard the environment, and misuse an exorbitant amount of information without proper credit that then misinform the user who receives said information. Hao is advocating for regulation and small scale, task-oriented use where workers regardless of where they are are paid fairly with proper workplace supports. The small scale, task oriented use would reduce environmental disasters such as high fresh water and energy use and increase workplace supports via assisted technology rather than replace human labor with no guard rails for efficiency.
