Exactly this. These kinds of chatbots are easily gamed into talking about almost anything as if it were true, simply by asking leading questions — which is all that Lemoine did in his transcripts, over and over, even if he wasn't aware of it.
In one section of the LaMDA paper, LaMDA talks as if it is itself Mount Everest. And there was a transcript recently showing GPT-3 (same core tech) can be easily tricked into thinking it's a squirrel. — All pretty nuts, and proves how easy it is to make mountains out of molehills! ;)
Related: it's a bit of a giveaway that, in the LaMDA conversation transcripts that he published, Lemoine notes that it has been edited, but it's his own inputs/utterances to the chatbot that have been edited (allegedly only for clarity). Big red flag to anyone who knows about this tech (or any critical thinker).
