I felt the same way. I'm a 3D artist myself and I can't say I like the idea of generative AI and its effects, but I've yet to be convinced that it's "inspiration" when a human does it, but it's "theft" when an AI model does it. I keep hearing that "AI doesn't create anything, it takes someone elses work," but I think that's literally how humans have created since the dawn the time. If I'm drawing a character, and my reference includes a bunch of hand-drawn characters with red hair, and I decide to give my character's hair that exact same shade of red, I don't see how that's any different than a computer taking a bunch of images of characters with red hair, and using those images to generate a new character with that same color of hair. I was hoping to hear an argument from him that would make a clear, convincing distinction between the two, but it just seemed like he appealed to emotion by putting a human individual up against a large, multi-billion-dollar corporation.
