Because they're the same people. They come from the same super online debate bro/tech bro culture. They circulate the same ideas between each other. MIRI was funded by Peter Thiel. Altman's an "Effective Altruist", which is a movement that grew largely on Yudkowsky's LessWrong site.
One of the few differences is some of them think they can control AI to control people, and some are scared of AI. Otherwise? They view the world very similarly.
