@FlightlessTuatarato me he seems to be saying that LLMs have produced insights into the mechanics of jokes that comedians have not achieved, which seems flatly wrong to me.
If you ask an LLM to tell you some jokes, I bet you can recognise what it was trying to do - because you’re familiar with how jokes go - but pretty much all of its attempts will either be unoriginal jokes or ones that don’t work. Sometimes by chance it might produce a corker. But it wouldn’t itself recognise it was a better joke than its other attempts.
