Let's not pretend that current "AI" or in other words, LLMs have any sort of consciousness or are anything other than a sophisticated predictive text. They cannot feel anything because there is no ghost in the shell.
Also there is no clear path to true AI aka AGI, there's no real research on it - other than what one could call speculative fiction and assumptions. What's clear is that LLMs will not lead to it. Those are the words of the chief AI guy at Meta, btw.
To flip your argument, I'd argue LLMs being sycophantic yes-men validating everything you say is already worse for society than if they were just dry output generators akin to search engines
