AI is actually a misnomer for machine learning. AI really means expert systems that are just complex calculations, branching IF statements. That's why it is artificial, because it looks intelligent from the outside. Machine Learning on the other hand is replicating the computation of the brain, it learns and generalizes the same way our brains do. The intelligence is real, the substrate is artificial. So saying that machine learning is artificial intelligence is like saying a calculator does artificial math. The problem with consciousness is that no one can define it and from a computation perspective it doesn't seem to matter. What is the point in asking if a machine is conscious if I can't even prove another person is conscious or even define what it means?
