It's like colouring books. When I colour in a colouring page, I'm being super creative, but there's a stop sign in my head that says "oh yeah, this isn't my original art, this is turning out cool but it's not just me, it's this other artist helping me, like we're collaborating." The whole reason I pulled out the colouring book instead of drawing something myself is because I didn't feel like dealing with the challenge of designing and iterating and trying to come up with a piece, and hitting my limits and developing my skillset. I was tired, I didn't want that kind of challenge. Finishing someone else's art was what I was after. I think we need the same stop sign in our heads about AI. You wouldn't enter a colouring book page in an art contest, and if you did, it would only be ethical if you not only credited the author, but got their consent, like they'd be there winning the prize with you, they'd be a bigger deal than you unless your colouring was like something the world has never seen lol. There just is nothing wrong with not being a big deal. AI companies want you to think your creativity is only good if you're the only author, then they pretend that you're using their tools like a paintbrush in an isolated room, and tell you you're a big deal, but only if you get to use their crazy high tech tools. But really, the tools aren't that special, and really you're collaborating with other artists, which is literally fine, IF you have consent and you credit them fairly. And when you're prompting, I think if you credit artists fairly, you'll be an insignificant footnote in comparison to their hard work. Like an old school fancy art patron, but without the money, without the influence, just hot takes on what they should paint lol. It's okay to be honest about your contribution to a piece of art. Just because one contributor needed a lifetime of drive and practicing and investment in order to develop their skillset doesn't mean the other more unskilled contributor's ideas were worthless. In fact, it's the opposite, I bet if there was an ethical AI platform, I bet lots of artists would want to contribute to make your ideas come to life, they would love that their lifetime of hard earned skills could be used to not only make THEIR imagination come to life, but yours too. But your ideas are only valuable if everyone else's contributions are fairly valued too, and it's really important to be willing to not be a big deal.
