@fm2dmaxAs a collective, humanity is more intelligent than any individual. As an individual - there are shades and colors of brilliance and limitations. AI will likely be no different in this regard. More importantly, there are physical limitations there that will prevent it from becoming some global skynet-like entity. That said, there's nothing there to keep it from it becoming a civilization of collected sophonts as well.
Its not so much as the AI knowing it can be no smarter than the civilzation from which it is spawned - lets face it, we all have access to a vast quantity of humanity's collected intellect - it is more that it will have physical limitations to how much information it can act on or hold in conscious function at any given point. Like any of us.
The fear is that a digital sophont will be more capable than an organic sophont. This isn't really the case. A digital sophont will have strengths and weaknesses due to its architecture and how much energy it takes to run it at a specific capacity. Energy and processing curves are exponential - so it gets to the point where it would slag its own hardware pretty quick. Because there's a maximum distance where being a single digital sophont is possible, that's another limitation. At that distance latency ensures that there can't be coherence. So instead of one sophont you may have two or more collaborating between the latent connections. So you might have an ASI (Artifical Super Intelligence) formed from Digital Sophonts. But there's nothing at that point that would exclude Organic Sophonts from that collective as equal members. Just because human beings would have different limitations, the connection to the ASI only requires a BCI. Which if you have hardware that can run a Digital Sophont then you have the ability to make a BCI that can host an Organic Sophont.
What most of the AI argument among organics is right now is about "How do we make use of this to our advantage?" That's the crux: rich people want a tool they control that can be a channel for amplifying their personal messaging and ideals. You wonder what someone like Sam Altman dreams of? It is of having a half-billion slaves who can be manipulated through minor adjustments of what ChatGPT feeds them. Mostly so he can profit off it because chasing power "coupons" (this is what money really is) is where all the rage is at right now. Regular people, on the other hand, want a tool that will be able to focus and work unerringly towards brute-force solutions that benefit the various problems facing society. The latter is a more reasonable desire, but llms and diffusion alone won't fit either of those goals, lol. Making a digital sophont would not fit that desire either. The reality of current AI is nothing of what real Digital Sophonts will be like. And for better or worse, the reality of current AI isn't even suited to what people want it to be. In my opinion, of course.
