We have known since the days of Othello-GPT that LLMs model the world. The training process creates internal world models as compressions of the training data. That is why they are able to generalize out of distribution to some degree.
That's the most trivial example, but there are many, many more direct-empirical-proof examples and other ways to demonstrate this fact, including with recent frontier models.
