@BloodRiot81 Valid points. A few things to consider: There was a time when currency could only be controlled by governments...until there wasn't with the advent of certain cryptocurrencies and it forced the powers to adjust. Think exponentially, not linearly. Also, keep these two things in mind. During the Great Depression unemployment rose to about 25%. There were great social and legal changes based on that. What would happen if we push that to 50% or 75%? The other thing is The other thing is Peter Diamandis' key contributions of the Six Ds of Exponential Growth: Digitization, Deception, Disruption, Demonetization, Dematerialization, and Democratization. This framework explains how technology evolves from early obscurity to widespread impact. For example, once a product or service becomes digitized, it can spread quickly and scale exponentially from physical formats to digital apps; faster, cheaper, and more accessible than ever before.
- Digitalization: Example: The transition from vinyl records to digital music files (MP3s) made music easier to store and share.
- Deception: Example: Early internet connections were slow and unreliable, leading many to doubt its potential.
- Disruption: Example: Streaming services like Netflix disrupted traditional video rental stores.
- Demonetization: Example: The cost of cloud storage has dropped, making it affordable for everyone to store data online. Many sites will give you free storage.
- Democratization: Example: 3D printing technology has become accessible to hobbyists and small businesses.
- Dematerialization: Example: The shift from physical books to e-books. Dematerialization refers to the process of converting physical products or goods into digital formats or systems that no longer require traditional physical resources for creation or distribution. While printed books once required raw materials like paper, ink, and shipping, e-books can be stored, transferred, and consumed digitally, requiring only a fraction of the resources. This reduces not only production and transportation costs but also the environmental impact of mass printing and distribution. Similarly, the dematerialization of software through cloud computing allows applications to be accessed online without requiring physical disks or hardware upgrades, making technology more accessible while reducing waste. In the future, technologies like 3D printing and nanotechnology will enable us to further dematerialize production, transforming tangible, resource-intensive industries into highly efficient, less resource-dependent ones. Imagine replacing factory-built goods with designs that can be printed at home or locally, using materials that are largely recyclable and biodegradable. Dematerialization allows for a world where abundance is not tied to the extraction of resources but rather to the digitalization of creation and fabrication reducing material needs while maintaining or even increasing the quality and availability of goods.
The only way to peacefully make the transition is to show those in power how they will be better off through and after the transition. It's a sad state of affairs but there's a cadre of people out there if given two choices they would take the latter. 1) everybody is 10 times better off than they are now; 2) you are twice as well off and everybody else stays the same. There will be a niche for those with an entrepreneurial competence. Problem is, a majority of people (2/3 to 3/4 I'd guess) do not have the entrepreneurial drive/spirit/competence. No doubt there will be resistance. Balancing economic efficiency with equity in a system not designed for universal disbursement is a major undertaking. We have 200,000 years of evolution to try to overcome in a few years. The best way to deal with those egos, is to find some way to show how it will be better for them personally to do the right thing. Some areas to consider:
Psychologically, many societies are deeply attached to the idea that income must be earned through labor. This connection between work and worth runs so deep that even in the face of increasing automation, many resist the idea of unconditional income. Money is not only a medium of exchange, it carries status, meaning, and social identity. Redefining these associations will be essential but profoundly difficult.
Cultural resistance may also stem from deeply held religious or philosophical beliefs about the role of work, the nature of wealth, and the purpose of human life. For some, the idea of a world without labor challenges traditional notions of virtue, discipline, or divine order. Addressing these concerns with respect will facilitate meaningful cultural shifts.
If employing UBI, logistically, administering a truly universal and effective UBI system is no small task. Ensuring equitable distribution across demographics, preventing fraud or misuse, integrating with existing economic systems, and maintaining public trust will all require new frameworks, technologies, and oversight mechanisms.
Institutional resistance may prove even more formidable. Powerful interests such as governments, corporations, individuals with status, and financial institutions may see UBI as a threat to the status quo. In particular, the idea of distributing income without conditions challenges traditional power dynamics. Throughout history, access to money and resources has often been used as a tool of control. A system that weakens those levers will not be embraced without friction.
